James LeRoy Werts, 52, of Earlham died of cancer July 9, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 13, at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Pastor Jon Gaul officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery near Earlham.

Jim Werts was born Aug. 10, 1945, in Madison County to Loyal and Phyllis (Frey) Werts. He was a 1963 graduate of Earlham High School and a United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He married Donna Lavonne Decker on July 26, 1969, at Peru. A lifetime resident of Earlham, Jim was a print manager at Farm Bureau in Des Moines. He also was a member of the Jaycees, Implant Printers Association, Earlham Planning and Zoning Committee and the First Presbyterian Church in Earlham.

He was preceded in death by grandparents.

He is survived by his wife; his parents; one son, Daniel of Earlham; one daughter, Amanda Werts (husband Stacey Collier) of Des Moines; two brothers, Dick Werts of Earlham and Harry Werts of Des Moines; three sisters, Lucille Wycoff of Winterset, Dorothy Smith of Grinnell and Carolyn Hibbs of Vinton; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa.
