James Franklin, the son of Eli and Letitia Cross, was born in Meigs county, Ohio, November 18, 1860. He grew to manhood at that place, coming to Jasper county, Iowa in the year 1881.

On July 26, 1896, he was united in marriage to Rebecca E. Dawson. To this union were born eight children, seven daughters of whom survive, the son, Wade Franklin, dying in infancy.

In March, 1909, Mr. Cross moved with his family to Madison county, Iowa, settling near Lorimor, where he resided until his death, June 28, 1923, at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 10 days.

He leaves his wife and the following children: Myrtell, now Mrs. Millard Smith of Lorimor, Iowa; Kathryn, now Mrs. Bert Bair of Harrisburg, Nebr.; Coral, now Mrs. Gilman Castor of Ira, Iowa; Lettitia, now Mrs. Calvin Leak of Creston, Iowa; Ester, now Mrs. George Cannon of Newton, Iowa; Fern and Aura Frances at home.

Mrs. Cross was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in young manhood and remained a faithful member until his death. Besides the above mentioned he leaves to mourn his death twelve grandchildren and two sisters Mrs. Mina Thomas of Ira, Iowa and Mrs. Emma Stickley of Omaha, and other relatives and friends.

Since last October, Mr. Cross has failed rapidly in health. His life was a weakness from day to day and grew constantly worse with never a day of improvement. He bore his sufferings patiently and showed great consideration for those around him. Although he desired to live longer, he was ready and willing to go.

Short services at home Sunday morning. The body was taken to Ira, Iowa, and services were held in the M. E. church at 2:L30 p. m., Rev. Vidders conducting the service. Burial at Union Chapel.
