Mary Jane Crawford, daughter of Frank and Zella Sankey Downs, was born near St. Charles, on February 15, 1899 and died at Bethesda Care Center in Winterset, on May 7, 1988 at the age of 89 years.
She received her education in the St. Charles schools and was a lifetime resident of the St. Charles area. She was a member of the St. Charles United Methodist Church which is presently the United Parish Church.
On October 16, 1918 she was married to Jesse Serene Crawford at St. Charles, and two daughters were born to this union. Mary spent her married life with her husband, Jesse on the Crawford farm near St. Charles, which had been owned by the Crawford family for three generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jesse on November 22, 1983; two brothers, Carl and Cash.
She is survived by: daughter, Charlotte Laura Scheid and husband Herbert of Fullerton, California; daughter, Harriet Edmunds and husband James of Fullerton, California; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three brothers: Don Downs of St. Charles, Dwight Downs of St. Charles and Rex Downs of Boxholm, Iowa; one sister, Florence Eichner of Booneville.
Funeral services were held May 11, 1988 at the Kale Funeral Home in Truro with burial in the St. Charles cemetery. Pastor James Patrick of Indianola officiated.
