Harriett Ethel Welch Harmon, 97, of Earlham, died of respiratory failure Nov. 13, 1997. Funeral services were Nov. 15 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham. The Rev. Larry Nelson officiated the service, and burial followed at the Earlham Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 24, 1900, in Hamblen Co., Tenn., to James and Mariah Couch. She graduated from Knoxville High School and taught at Pleasantville and Pershing Schools. She married Willard Welch on June 12, 1925, and lived in Earlham. After Willard's death in 1958, she later married David Harmon on May 2, 1965. They lived in Hollister, Mo. from 1968 to 1985. She had lived in Earlham since 1996. She was a member of the Earlham Methodist Church and also the Victor Baptist Church in Hollister, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; three brothers; and twin great-grandchildren.

Surviving relatives include her husband David of Earlham; two daughters, Norma Conrad and husband Eugene of Earlham, Sharleen Fricke and husband Robert of Marshalltown; two step-sons, Merle Harmon of Minneapolis, Minn., David Harmon of Des Moines; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
