Ella Mae Nitchals, 88, of Earlham, died of congestive heart failure July 14, 1997 at her home. Funeral services were held July 18 at the Earlham Friends Church with the Pastor Larry Nelson officiating. Burial followed at the Earlham Cemetery.

She was born to George and Ellen (McDonald) Wolverton on January 2, 1909 in Madison County. She attended country schools and Winterset High School. On July 2, 1930, she married Charles Nitchals in Winterset. She lived in Earlham most of her life and worked as a cook at the Earlham Cafe as well as the Bentler Cafe before she retired in 1971.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, and one brother.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mary Laughridge of Earlham, Wilma Heldenbrand and husband Joe of Des Moines; one son, William Nitchals and wife Margaret of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Edna Wolverton of Winterset; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
