H. M. "Miles" Cooper, Winterset

Howard Miles Cooper, 82, of Winterset died of cancer May 25, 1999 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 28 at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Pastor Don Frank officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Miles Cooper was born Nov. 5, 1916 in Clarke County to Perry Edward and Lucy (Patterson) Cooper. He married Fern Viola Miller on Jan. 30, 1937, in Bethany, Mo. He resided in Winterset for over 50 years, having previously lived in Truro. Miles, an Army veteran of World War II, was wounded in Okinawa. He was the retired owner/operator of Cooper Truck Lines and a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Winterset, DAV, and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Richard L. Cooper (wife Jeannie) of Blue Eye, Mo.; two daughters, Sharon Dooley of Rogers, Ark., and Shirley Lents (husband Roger) of Frisco, Texas; one brother, Ed Cooper of Polk City; one sister, Ruby Hendrickson of Winterset; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the World War II Memorial Fund.
