Lloyd K. Smith, 73, of Earlham, died of cardiac arrest on Jan. 1, 1997 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were Jan. 4 at the Early Chapel Church in rural Earlham. Pastor David Clark officiated the services and burial was at the Penn Center Cemetery.

He was born in rural Earlham on May 22, 1923 to Chester and Maggie (Pearson) Smith. He was a 1941 graduate of Earlham High School. He married Carol I. McCarthy on Sept. 29, 1945 at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines. He had been a farmer and a carpenter in the Earlham area. He was a lifetime resident of Madison County and a member of the Early Chapel Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; one brother; and two sisters.

Surviving relatives include his wife; four sons, William Smith and wife Susan of Earlham, Michael Smith of Des Moines, Daniel Smith of Earlham, and Mark Smith and wife Kelli of Oskaloosa; two daughters, Linda Strong and husband Stephen of Omaha, and Diana Scar and husband Dwayne of Earlham; two sisters, Pauline Noland of DeSoto and Ruth Noland of Carlisle; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
