Russell Lee Smith, 29, of Earlham, died of a respiratory ailment on Oct. 6, 1996 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services are being held today, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Hope in Des Moines. Pastor John Kline and Pastor David Clark will officiate the ceremonies. Burial will follow at the Earlham Cemetery.

He was born on June 25, 1967 in Des Moines to Ronald and Anna (Brunsmann) Smith. He graduated from Earlham High Schhol in 1986 and from Northwestern College in Orange City in 1990, and he ran track at both schools. He also worked for Triple A Roofing in Des Moines as a roofer and was a lifetime resident of Earlham.

He was preceded in death by two grandfathers and one grandmother.

Surviving relatives include his father, Ronald Smith of Earlham; his mother, Ann Smith Holtmyer and husband John of Earlham; one son, Logan Smith of Waukee; one grandmother, Maxine Brunsmann of Winterset; two brothers, Tim Smith and wife Gail of Urbandale, and Rod Smith of Crystal River, Fl.; and two sisters, Tamara Meyer and husband Russell of Altus Air Force Base in Altus, Okla., and Angela Henry and husband Rory of Patterson.
