E. C. COOK OF WINTERSET DIES

Was Leading Citizen in Community for Many Years

Emmett C. Cook, a prominent Winterset citizen for many years, died Thursday, March 7, at Memorial hospital here. He was 63 years of age, and had been in failing health in recent years.

Mr. Cook was born near Stuart May 27, 1904, a son of Arthur E. and Mary Pettingell Cook. Most of his life was spent in Madison county.

He was married at Earlham on Dec. 24, 1925, to Gladys M. Leeper, who survives him.

Mr. Cook had retired several years ago after many years of service as manager of the Iowa Power and Light company in Winterset. During his residence in this community, he was active in many phases of community life. He was a past president of the Winterset Rotary club, a past president of the board of education of the Winterset school district, a former advisor of the Explorer Scout post in this community, and a past chairman of the board of the First Christian church in Winterset, and a member of the Masonic lodge here. He was a graduate of Drake university in Des Moines.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Kermit C. Cook of Muscatine, C. Keith Cook of Ft. Dodge, and Kenneth D. Cook of Lomax, ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles M. Strong of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren. He also leaves three brothers, Miles Cook of Maxwell, Joe Cook of Grove City, Minn., and Carl Cook of Des Moines; and three sisters, Mrs. Esther Allen of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Gladys McCurdy of Eureka, Wash., and Mrs. Anna Pinnell of Fresno, Calif.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the First Christian church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. William E. Bowles, assisted by Dwight Ganoe. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
