JOHN CODY DIES

Well Known Carpenter and Inn Keeper of Bevington Died Saturday

Funeral services for John Cody, well known resident of Bevington who died Saturday, December 22nd at his home, were held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Blair Chapel church. Mr. Cody who was 83 years of age had been in failing health for the past year, but was only seriously ill the last four weeks.

He came to this country in 1877 and was a carpenter, building many buildings throughout this county and others nearby. Thirty-five years ago, he and his wife opened the Cody hotel in Bevington and they operated this until the coming of the automobile eliminated the transient trade, and their advancing years caused them to live a more retired life.

John Cody, the son of Edward and Susanna MacParland Cody was born in Seneca Falls, New York, September 16, 1851. In 1853, he moved with his parents to Haricon, Wisconsin, where he spent his boyhood. He attended the Haricon public schools, and then learned the carpenter trade. Together with several other young men from this community, he came to Iowa in 1877. On May 2, 1880, he was married to Miss Mary Ann Strable of Bevington, and they were the parents of three children; William S., Agnes Ellen (Mrs. W. T. Lodge) and Edward P. Cody. For seven years the family lived in Harlan where he headed a contracting and building concern. Later, residences were made in Council Bluffs and other points. His business took him through Arkansas, Texas and other south central states.

In addition to his wife and his children, he leaves seven grandchildren.

The Rev. E. H. Carnahan conducted his funeral services and burial was made in the Blair Chapel cemetery. Pall bearers were J. H. McManus, J. H. Hamm, J. H. Hall, Erich Walter, Albert Schrivener and Dan Clark.
