December 1995William R. Bird, 66, of Earlham died of leukemia at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines on Dec. 18, 1995. Services were held on Dec. 21 at McCalley Funeral Home, with burial in McKibbin Cemetery in Earlham.
Mr. Bird was born in Des Moines and lived in Earlham for the past 11 years. He lived most of his life before that in Des Moines. He worked part-time as a baker for Casey's in Adel and retired as a baker for Younkers in downtown Des Moines. He retired in early 1994. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Bird is survived by his wife, Margery S. Bird of Earlham; four children, Linda S. Short of Wapello, Cindy L. Dyer of Earlham, Loree A. Chase of Des Moines and Mark W. Bird of Earlham. He is also survived by five siblings, Frances Bird of Des Moines, Pat Campbell of Des Moines, Ed Bird of Des Moines, Jack Bird of Des Moines and Donald Bird of Florida. Other survivors include six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Dallas County animal rescue league or the VA hospital in Des Moines.
