Ethel Clayton Dies

Ethel Melissa Clayton of Van Meter was born in Madison County, on Jan. 27, 1903, the daughter of John Wesley and Lillian Bell Roderick Reigle. She died May 6, 1981 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 78 years.

She lived on a farm with her parents in Jefferson township and attended Winterset High School. She was married to Jerome S. Golightly at her home on Feb. 4, 1925. They had one son Sanford Dale. Jerome died March 12, 1955.

On April 15, 1965 she married Roy A. Clayton. They lived on a farm near Van Meter until October 1980 when they moved to the West Park Care Center in West Des Moines.

Ethel was an active member in her community and church, being a girls 4-H leader several years, a member of the Jefferson EUB Church and Ladies Aid and in later years a member of United Methodist Church and Love Circle. She belonged to the Home Study Club, Prisilla Club, and attended a Bible Study Group.

Ethel is survived by her husband, Roy A. Clayton of West Park Care Center, her son and daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. Also five step-children, Al Clayton of St. Paul, Minn., Wanda Phillips of Ranchita, Calif., Esther Ranbeck of Glenwood, Minn., Phyllis Linn of Nevada, Iowa and Randy Clayton of Van Meter, Iowa. 15 step-grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Orah and Lloyd, and one sister, Mable Hazen.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9, 1981 at the United Methodist Church in Van Meter with Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating.

Burial was at the Jefferson Cemetery.
