Charles H. Leach, who had lived in Winterset for the past thirty years, died at his home on South Fourth avenue, on Thursday, March 7th, after a short illness. Mr. Leach had been ill with the flu and pneumonia developed, causing his death at the age of 58 years.

Mr. Leach was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Leach and was born in Story county, October 20, 1870. When he was a young man, he and his family moved on a farm in Jackson township. He was married to Nettie Huss in April, 1895, and they lived on different farms west of Winterset, until in 1898, when they came to town. For many years Mr. Leach was engaged in the livery business. He drove the Standard Oil wagon for a number of years. When the automobile came into use, his oil truck was the first truck in the community. In later years, he has helped the different stock buyers, and has a wide acquaintance over the county.

It is said that Mr. Leach was a great lover of horses and of all athletics. Mr. Leach is survived by his wife and their three children, Harry and Dell and Mrs. Nada Griffith, all of Des Moines. He also leaves two grandchildren, three brothers: Alfred, in California; Ed, in Kansas City; Will, of Douglas township, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Williams, of California.

Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, conducted the funeral service Saturday afternoon, March 9th, in the Tidrick funeral home, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Charles Hiram Leach

Charles Hiram, son of Nancy and Hiram Leach, was born in Story county, Iowa, October 20, 1870.
His boyhood was spent in Story county. The family moved to Madison county when he was grown and lived on the farm in Jackson township.

He was married to Nettie Huss in April 1895. To this union, three children were born, Harry and Dell and Mrs. Nada Griffith, all living in Des Moines. After their marriage, they lived on different farms west of Winterset and came to Winterset in 1898, living most of the time in their present home.

During their first years in town, he was engaged in the livery business, then drove the Standard Oil wagon for a number of years. When automobiles came into use, is oil truck was the first truck in the community. In the later years he has helped the different stock buyers. He was a great lover of horses and of all sports, a man of tireless energy and of a genial friendly nature, and was well known all over the county.

He passed away after a brief illness on March 7, 1929, aged 58 years, 4 months and 15 days.

He leaves his wife and children, to grandchildren, three brothers; Alfred in California, Ed in Kansas City, Will of Douglas township, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Williams of California; also many other relatives and many friends.

Rev. W. C. Porter conducted the funeral service Saturday afternoon, March 9 in the Tidrick funeral home. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
