VERL A CHASE DIES AT 57 YEARS

Had Been School Bus Driver For Earlham for 15 Years

Verl A. Chase, Douglas township farmer and a bus driver for the Earlham school for 15 years, died Thursday, March 8, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. He had suffered a heart attack the preceding day.

Mr. Chase was 57 years of age, and was a life-time resident of Madison county. He was born here Dec. 3, 1904, a son of Edward and Anna Applegate Chase. In 1934 he was married to Eunice Wright at Broken Bow, Nebr.

He was a member of the Worthington church, and the Madison county Sportsmen's club. His 15 years as a school bus driver made him the oldest driver in point of service in the Earlham school system.

He leaves his wife; two sons, John E. Chase of Des Moines and Verle A. Chase, Jr., who is stationed at Bolling Air base, Washington, D.C. with the United States Air force; a daughter, Marilyn Chase of Des Moines; and a sister, Mrs. Hazel Athey of Redfield.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. John C. Porath, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Chase-McDonald cemetery.

Verl A. Chase Services Held

Funeral services for Verl A. Chase, 57, of Winterset were held Saturday, March 10 at the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Rev. John C. Porath was in charge of the services. Burial was in the Chase-McDonald Cemetery in Madison county.

Verl Andrew Chase, son of Edward Chase and Anna Applegate Chase, was born December 3, 1904 in Madison county. He was a lifelong resident of this county. He passed away March 8, 1962 at the Madison Co. Memorial hospital in Winterset.

He was a farmer in Douglas township and an Earlham school bus driver for the past fifteen years. He also helped the Earlham businessmen at Christmas by playing Santa Claus for quite a number of years.

Mr. Chase was one of the first members of the Worthington church congregation.

He was a member of the Madison Co. Sportsman’s Club.

He was married to Eunice Wright in 1933.

Surviving him are his wife Eunice, three children: John Edmond of Des Moines, Verl A., jr., USAF, stationed at Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C., and Marilyn Chase of Des Moines; and one sister, Hazel Athey of Redfield.

His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

Out-of-town friends and relatives who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Akin, Ed Wright of Mason City, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. James Campfield, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Campfield, Diana Campfield of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. John Campfield, Osceola; Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Lovely and Susan, Mrs. Chas. Black, Greenfield.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Riley, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Strong of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Garold Bochart, Fontanelle.
