A most shocking accident happened just south of town on Monday morning by which James Chriss lost his life.

Mr. Chriss had came here last week to visit his two sisters, Mrs. John Friesen and Mrs. Hans Peterson, and had stopped over night Sunday at the home of the latter. He had been out hunting on Saturday with a borrowed gun and on Monday morning he started to town to return it. He went to Knud Madsen’s home and visited there for about an hour and then started up the creek toward town. At about eleven o’clock, and when but a short distance from the place where the men were at work in the quarry, he started to crawl through a barbed wire fence and in some way the gun was discharged, the charge entering his abdomen. The gun was so close to his body when discharged that it set fire to his hunting jacket which contained a number of loaded shells, and he retained presence of mind enough to take it off and throw it away before he fell to the ground. It was but a short time until all the shells in it exploded. The accident happened but a short distance from the Olson home and Mrs. Olson heard his cries for help and hastened to him. She notified the quarry men who ran to his assistance. Drs. Maulsby and Irvin were summoned before the injured man was moved and as soon as they arrived and examined the wound they pronounced it fatal. He was then removed to the Hans Peterson home where he lingered until 3:30 Tuesday morning. His father who lives hear Kellogg, was notified at once by telegraph, but did not arrive here until after his son’s death.

The deceased was an industrious young man. He was born near Kellogg, Iowa, on June 24, 1874, and had lived there all his life. The funeral service was held in the Friends church on Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. W. Stribling, and interment was in Earlham cemetery. (date of death is March 19, 1901)
