Gretchen Casper, Winterset

Margaret Gretchen Casper, 86, died March 9, 2002, of complications of diabetes at Winterset Care Center South.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 12 at the First Christian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Dr. Bobby G. Dickerson officiating. Burial was at North McDonald Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Madison County.

Gretchen Casper was born Feb. 4, 1916, in Madison County to Ernest and Georgia (Hunt) Mueller. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teaching College in Cedar Falls and taught country school until her marriage to Robert E. Casper on June 14, 1936, in Winterset. A lifetime resident of the Winterset area, Gretchen was a member of P.E.O., American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Pythian Lodge, numerous bridge and study clubs and the Winterset First Christian Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher for 30 years. She also had been a 4-H leader (past state president).

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and a sister.

She is survived by two sons, Robert M. Casper (wife Peggy) and John E. Casper, both of Winterset; a daughter, Sue Baker (husband Ron) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a sister, Etta Frink of Yuba City, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Christian Church in Winterset.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
