DR. STERMAN DIES AT PERU HOME

Attacked With Pneumonia Peru Doctor Dies After Short Illness—Born in Madison County. Funeral Tuesday Afternoon And Burial In Winterset Cemetery.

Dr. Wilbur Sterman, who was taken ill with pneumonia soon after his release from the county jail where he was serving a sentence he considered unjust, died Friday.

Dr. Sterman had led a turbulent life since the close of the World War, engaging in unfortunate law suits, in which he was worsted. Embittered by the verdicts he printed circulars attacking his opponents. He was twice indicted for libel and convicted. He took the second case to the Supreme Court and refused to pay the fine of $500 and costs, electing to serve out the jail sentence. After serving two or three weeks of the sentence Mrs. Sterman prevailed on him to pay the fine and he was released. He was taken ill immediately and did not recover.

Dr. Sterman was born in Madison county, his father being one of the first settlers of Union township. He had ability and was well educated. He studied medicine and had a lucrative practice in Winterset until his removal to Peru ten or twelve years ago. He is survived by his wife and two sisters.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the residence, Rev. Shenton, of Winterset, officiating. The burial was in Winterset cemetery.
