BURTON SMITH, Former Mayor Died Last Friday

Burton J. Smith, recent mayor of Winterset and South Ward council member, died Friday, April 21, 1978, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 56 years of age.

Mr. Smith was a building contractor in Winterset. He was elected to serve as South Ward council member in November, 1973, and did so from January 1974, until September of that year when he was appointed mayor to succeed Robert Howell. Mr. Smith served as mayor until December 1975.

He was born July 16, 1921, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Harry J. Smith Sr. and Winifred Boland Smith. His marriage to Jean Johnson took place November 18, 1948, in Dubuque.

Mr. Smith was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a resident of this county seven years, a member of the Winterset Rotary and the Lake View Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; his father, Harry Smith Sr. of Dubuque; three brothers, Tom and Richard of Dubuque and Harry Jr. of Rockford, Ill. and one sister, Kathleen Gillespie of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services for Burton J. Smith were conducted Monday, April 24, at 11 a.m. from Collins Funeral Home with burial at the Winterset Cemetery. Military graveside services were observed. Rev. Byron Ayers officiated.
