John E. Brown, 87, of Winterset, died of cancer Dec. 27, 1996 at his residence. Funeral services were Dec. 30 at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. The Rev. Shirley J. Lockard officiated the services and burial was at the Earlham Cemetery.
He was born in Malden, Washington on Sept. 8, 1909 to John Eugene and Carolyn (Stanley) Brown. He was a 1927 graduate of Winterset High School. He married Lenore Hamner on March 21, 1939 in Des Moines. He later married Mariam Cosand Dowler on Oct. 7, 1972 in Pitzer. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Earlham; Marguerite Rebekah Lodge #233 of Earlham; Board of Elders of the Pitzer U.P. Church; Farm Bureau; and the United Presbyterian Church in Pitzer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and one sister.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Mariam Brown of Winterset; one son, Jack E. Brown and wife Marijke of Greenfield; one daughter, Deloris K. East and husband John of Eufaula, Okla.; three stepsons, Dave Dowler and wife Lynn of Ester, Alaska, John Dowler of Van Meter and Charles Dowler and wife Peggy of Norwalk; one step-daughter, Ann Newbury and husband Max of Winterset; one step-foster-son, Merle Bancroft and wife Shirley of Great Falls, Mont.; four grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; four step-foster-grandchildren; and five step-foster-great-grandchildren.
