Raymond Braddock, Boone

Raymond Mervin Braddock, 81, of Boone died Jan. 12, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Monday Jan. 17, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Father John Ludwig officiating. Burial was at Ebenezer Cemetery, Walnut Township, Madison County.

Raymond Braddock was born May 2, 1923 to Harley and Irene (Gertien) Braddock of Lotts Creek. He attended country school in Kossuth County. On Dec. 28, 1943, in Algona, he married Ruth Josephine Heinen. In 1957, they moved near Truro where they farmed. Ruth preceded him in death in 1974. On April 15, 1978, he married Gladys Marie (Morgan) Overland in Osceola. For 20 years they spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz. In 2000, they moved to Boone. Raymond was a charter member of the Truro Lions Club. He also was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osceola prior to moving. He had been a resident of Regency Care Center in Norwalk for the past two years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth; an infant daughter, Rita; two sisters, Ethel Braddock and Ruth Hack; three brothers, Wayne, Rueben and Clarence Braddock; one grandson Ryan Phillips; and one stepgranddaughter, Debra Herrera.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Boone; five daughters, Barbara Duncan of St. Peters, Mo., Carol Bottenfield of Des Moines, Donna Phillips of Osceola, Diane Wolfe of Earlham and Carla Culver of Dodgeville, Wis.; three sons, Joseph M. Braddock of St. Charles, Jerry Braddock of Willow Springs, Mo., and Gene Braddock of Osceola; one stepdaughter, Dorris Lundy of Osceola; one stepson, Jim Overland of Ankeny; a brother, Cecil Braddock of Lacey, Wash.; a sister, Francis Anderson of Armstrong; and 25 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

RAYMOND MERVIN BRADDOCK

Raymond Mervin Braddock, son of Harley Braddock and Irene Gertien Braddock, was born May 2, 1923, at Lotts Creek and died Jan. 12, 2005, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 81.

Mr. Braddock attended country school in Kossuth County. He married Ruth Josephine Heinen on Dec. 28, 1943, in Algona and they became the parents of nine children, Rita, Barbara, Joseph, Jerry, Gene, Carol, Donna, Diane and Carla. Mr. and Mrs. Braddock moved to a farm near Truro in 1957 where they farmed and raised their family. Ruth Braddock preceded him in death in 1974.

Mr. Braddock married Gladys Marie Morgan Overland on April 15, 1978, in Osceola. The couple enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, Ariz., for 20 years. They moved to Boone in 2000. Mr. Braddock has lived in the Regency Care Center in Norwalk for the past three years.

Farming was a great love of Mr. Braddock’s. He also enjoyed fishing and following the Chicago Cubs. He was a charter member of Truro Lions Club. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Osceola before he moved to Boone where he became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mr. Braddock was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; infant daughter, Rita; two sisters, Ethel Braddock and Ruth Hack; two brothers, Wayne Braddock and Rueben Braddock; a grandson, Ryan Phillips and step-granddaughter, Debra Herrera.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Braddock of Boone; eight children, Barbara Duncan and husband Clark of St. Peters, Mo., Joseph M. Braddock and wife Linda of St. Charles, Jerry Braddock and wife Anita of Willow Springs, Mo., Gene Braddock and wife Judy and Donna Phillips and husband Roger, all of Osceola, Carol Bottenfield and husband Kam of Des Moines, Diane Wolfe and husband Dave of Earlham and Carla Culver and husband Jeff of Dodgeville, Wis., 25 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil Braddock and wife Maxine of Lacey, Wash., and Clarence Braddock of Waterloo; a sister, Francis Anderson of Armstrong; a stepdaughter, Doris Lundy and husband Virgil of Osceola; a stepson, Jim Overland of Ankeny; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Braddock were held Jan. 17 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. John Ludwig of St. John the Apostle Church in Cummings officiating. Organist was Pennie Gonseth. Vocalists were sisters-in-law, Margaret Jansen and Marie Mears. Musical selections were How Great Thou Art, In the Garden and Old Rugged Cross.

Casket bearers were his grandchildren. Interment was in Ebenezer Cemetery in Madison County.
