Hugh Brooks Braden was born in Des Moines county, Iowa, March 29, 1846 and was called to his eternal reward Jan. 25th, at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 27 days. For a number of years he lived in Indianola and from there he came to Winterset in 1898, at which time he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Bole. For several years he was engaged in farming, then on account of failing health, took up the work of selling Bibles and religious books, which he did for 20 years. Six years ago, his health did not permit him to continue this work, but with his wonderful ambition was always busy helping in every way he could.

At the early age of 12, he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ, and became a faithful and sincere follower, becoming a member of the United Presbyterian church. Unless Providentially hindered, Sabbath day always found him in his place of worship. During the past few years, he was unable to attend church services but he still remained faithful, always reading his Bible and kneeling in prayer before the throne of God.

He had one sister and five brothers, two of whom were ministers, but all have preceded him in death. There remain to hold him in fond and loving memory, his wife and four children, Latitia and Thomas, at home, Mrs. Lester Fuson of Winterset and Mrs. ----- Stalcup of Afton. He was able to be up most of the time until the last six days when he was confined to his bed. Shortly before the end came he proposed that the family repeat the Lord’s Prayer with him and when finishing this prayer he said in a faint voice, “forever and ever, Amen” and soon after was taken to his ever eternal home.

Funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church Monday morning, conducted by Rev. W. Z. -----.
