Gailen Smith, Elkhart

Gailen Wayne Smith, 77, of Elkhart died Jan. 5, 2005, in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Ankeny Funeral Home with Pastor Randol Goodrich officiating. Burial was at Elkhart Cemetery.

Gailen Smith was born April 11, 1927, in Union Township, Madison County, to Gailen James and Myrlee (White) Smith. His early years were spent in the Winterset area where he attended school. On July 11, 1948, in Winterset, he was united in marriage to Veda Mae Collinson of Earlham. He was retired from Nabisco, where he had been employed for 33 years. In 1988, Gailen was honored for his many years of service to Elkhart as chief of the fire and police departments.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Ann Preston.

He is survived by his wife, Veda of Elkhart; one daughter, Vickie Lea Preston; and a sister, Lois Stuart of Winterset.
