Services for Joe S. Bown, 78, a 20-year resident of Madison County, were held Saturday, Mar. 12 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
Dr. Thomas Bergstrom, county medical examiner, ruled Mr. Bown's death a suicide.
Born in Warren County July 8, 1904, he was the son of George and Lucy Chumbley Bown. He married Alice Edgington Aug. 1, 1933 and spent most of his life in farming and as a carpenter, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a past member of the Methodist Men's Club and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include a son, George of rural Winterset; a daughter, Mrs. Mack (JoAnn) Jamison of rural Winterset; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
