Maria Duff was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, May 13, 1843, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. F. McBride, near Worthington, May 18, 1923, aged 80 years and 5 days. She was the daughter of William and Margaret Ann Adams Duff.
In 1858 she came with her parents to Madison county, where on Dec. 11, 1861 she was united in marriage to William H. Bowlsby, who departed this life May 8, 1888. To this union were born nine children, two sons and seven daughters. She is survived by two brothers, William and Eber Duff of Earlham, five daughters, fifteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
The surviving members of her immediate family are: Mrs. B. F. McBride, Mrs. D. H. Tough, Mrs. J. H. Olson of Earlham; Mrs. J. H. Parkins of Winterset and Mrs. I. B. Knowles of Des Moines.
She had lived on the same old home farm 62 years. No kinder or more indulgent mother could have been or more beloved by her children and grandchildren. If she ever erred it was more the result of mental conclusion than of deliberate motive. She was a conscientious Christian and desired that all her posterity might be honest and upright. She lived an exemplary life and the community in which she lived was made better by her having lived in it. She had a kind word for everyone, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. Her family must bow to the inevitable, realizing that in her departure she has left a void which none other can fill. Many friends join in extending their sympathy to the bereaved ones.
Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. L. Thomas at 2:30 p.m. May 20th and interment was made at the Worthington cemetery.
