Nellie Maxine Kempe
July 3, 1927 - August 25, 1983

Nellie M. Kempe, daughter of Albert and Katie I. Sole, was born July 3, 1927 at her parents' farm home four-and-one-half miles southeast of Earlham. She passed away on August 25, 1983.

Nellie was a life-long resident of the Earlham community except for brief absences. She graduated from Earlham High School in 1945 and attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school in Redfield and Guthrie Center, Iowa.

On April 16, 1955 she was united in marriage to Edward H. Kempe in Earlham. Three children blessed this union; Mrs. Richard (Irene) Wheeldon, Jr. of Martensdale, Carl E. of Boone and Joan M. of Martensdale.

Nellie was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church at Earlham. She was a loving, proud mother, devoted to her family and proud of the contribution of her parents, grandparents and relatives in the pioneer development of Madison County.

Survivors are her husband, Edward; their children; a step-son, Roger of Boone; one grandchild, Nathan Wheeldon, and one sister, Mrs. James (Helen) Buche of East Moline, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were held Saturday, August 27, 1983 at the First United Presbyterian Church, Earlham with Rev. Gladys Priest officiating. Music was provided by Donna Fastle, organist. Pallbearers were Marlin Brittain, Richard Wheeldon, Jr., Tim Erickson, Ted Harris, Richard Cooper, Jack Padilla. Interment was at Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
