FERNE STONE, Des Moines

Ferne Marie Stone, 77, of Des Moines died of a stroke Jan. 11, 2006, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

A memorial service was held Saturday, April 1, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Ferne Stone was born Oct. 16, 1928, near Milo to John Roy and Hazel (Bolton) Demory. She grew up in Indianola, graduating from Indianola High School. She continued her education at Simpson College, Iowa State University and Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University), where she received a master’s degree in speech pathology. From 1969 to 1984, Ferne was an instructor in the department of speech and communications at Iowa State University.

She is survived by three sons, John David Stone of Grinnell, Paul Stone of Winterset and Mark Stone of Lawrence, Kan.; one daughter, Beth Julian of Gilbert, Ariz.; a sister, Evelyn Labertew of Indianola; two brothers, Ralph Demory of Indianola and Glenn Demory of Phoenix, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
