Rocco W. Berch, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Berch of Peru, died Saturday, Oct. 28, in a Des Moines hospital, of injuries received in a highway accident near Martensdale last Thursday.
The fatal accident occurred on snow-slickened Highway 28, north of Martensdale. The young man, who was employed in Des Moines, was enroute to Peru that evening. Mrs. Phyllis Harper of Peru, who also works in Des Moines was riding with him.
The car went out of control on the snowy highway, plunged across the grader ditch and hit a tree. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital where his death occurred Saturday. Mrs. Harper, who was seriously injured, was brought to Memorial hospital in Winterset. Her condition was reported as good this week.
Rocco Wayne Berch was born in Des Moines July 30, 1947, a son of William and Dauryne Hindman Berch. With the exception of eight years in Missouri, his life was spent in Madison County. He attended the Peru Methodist church. He graduated from Winterset High school with the class of 1966.
He was employed at Look Magazine in Des Moines, and was attending school at the Electronic Computer Programming Institute there.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. William Berch of Peru; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hindman of Bradenton, Fla.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the First Methodist church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Everett K. Burham. Burial was to be made in Mt. Pelier cemetery at Patterson.
