Robert Harold Benson, 71, of Winterset, died of cancer Sept. 18, 1998, at Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines.

Memorial services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 22 by Iowa Cremation Society Funeral Director Bob Bacon. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Bob Benson was born June 8, 1927, in Des Moines to Ralph Albertus and Edna Ruth (Mallory) Benson. He attended Winterset Community Schools until the eighth grade. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific and Philippine Islands, and an Army veteran of the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He married Sylvia M. Pullman on July 4, 1956, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset.

Bob was a tool and die maker for AMF in Des Moines for 23 years. He also worked for Winterset Community Schools in building maintenance, Seed and Grain Systems Inc. at New Virginia and Jack Olson Cabinets in Urbandale. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife; five children, Timothy and Robin and Andrea M. Orr, all of Des Moines, and Daniel and Christopher, both of Winterset; four grandchildren; three sisters, Anita Conrad, Mary Lyons, and Bonnie Franks, all of Des Moines; and one brother, Albert Benson, also of Des Moines.
