Friday Funeral For Harland L. Benge

Funeral services for Harland LeRoy Benge of Winterset were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 27, at Collins Funeral Home. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery with Rev. Peter Quiring officiating. Mr. Benge died Wednesday, July 25, at Winterset Care Center North at the age of 78.

Born on December 16, 1900 at Lucas, Ia., he was the son of Perry and Eva Lane Benge. In September of 1922 he was married in Winterset to Mabel Allen, who survives him. A retired rock quarry laborer, he was a life-long resident here.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Emily Coghlan; a brother, and five sisters.

Also surviving are four sons, Herbert of Indianola, Harry of Patterson, Delbert of Des Moines, and William; seven daughters, Ethel Berry and Mary Thornburg, both of Winterset, Eileen Long of Aurora, Colo., Shirley Lewis of Lewis, Ia., Gloria Stanley of Des Moines, Eleanor Rhoads of Council Bluffs, and Victoria Phillips of Webster City; three brothers, Eddie and Fay, both of Winterset, and Richard of Des Moines; two sisters, Billie Cooper of Des Moines and Marge Peterson; 34 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
