OELWEIN

Lyle A. Jones, 90, of Oelwein, died Sunday afternoon, April 9, 2006, in Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters after a lengthy illness. Services: Heart Catholic Church, by the Rev. Frederick Fangmann. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, with a military memorial service at 6:30 p.m. and Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Lyle's family includes his wife, Charlene Regan Jones of Oelwein; five daughters, Dee Armentrout of Madison, Wis., Linda (Jim) Squiers of Bellevue, Janice Poling of Oelwein, Lisa Pierschbacher of Cedar Falls and Lori Jones of Cedar Rapids; a son, Mike (Molly) Jones of Anamosa; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Garnetta Jones of Winterset, Katheryn Ford of Long Beach, Calif., and Doris (Bob) Boots of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Thelma Jones and Geraldine Grubbs.

Lyle Andrew Jones was born Jan. 27, 1916 in Winterset, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Margaret (Picken) Jones. He graduated from Winterset High School and received a B.S. degree from Iowa State University. He then was an extension director in Butler and Allamakee counties. Lyle was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor, earning the rank of captain. He married Charlene Regan on June 13, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas. Lyle then was the general manager for Farm Service Co. in Maynard, Iowa for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Oelwein Council 1168, Farm Bureau and the Iowa State University Farmhouse fraternity.

Military memorial service will be conducted by the Ross Reid American Legion Post 9; the Scripture service will be conducted by the parish.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.
