Lula J. Beals, Bear Creek Community

Services for Lula J. Beals, 86, of the Bear Creek Community in southwest Dallas County, who died July 1 at the Winterset Care Center North where she resided, were held Friday, July 3, at the Bear Creek Friends Church with the Rev. Keith Smith officiating. Burial was at the Bear Creek Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 23, 1900 near Carson, the daughter of James and Marget Dixon Beals. At the age of one, her parents moved to the Bear Creek Community. She attended Bear Creek Elementary School and later Earlham Academy, graduating with the class of 1919. She attended Penn School of Commerce in 1924 and was employed for a time at Equitable Life Insurance Co.

She was a member of the Bear Creek Friends Church where she served both Sunday School and church, and was for many years secretary of the Bear Creek School Reunion Committee.

Survivors include a sister, Stella Jones of Earlham; brothers, Virgil of New Virginia and Earl of Earlham.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, an infant sister and a brother-in-law.

Lulu J., daughter to James and Marget Dixon Beals, was born near Carson, Iowa on August 23, 1900.

At the age of one-and on-half years, she moved with her parents and other family members to a farm in the Bear Creek Community in southwest Dallas County.

She attended Bear Creek Elementary School and later Earlham Academy, graduating with the class of 1919.

After graduating from a one year course at Penn School of Commerce in 1924, she was employed for a time at Equitable Life Insurance Company until that employment was terminated by the first of five surgeries she endured during her life-time.

Much of the time for a few years she was employed as a Housemaid until the spring of 1931 when she returned to the farm home where she resided and was a homemaker for the next 45 years.

After four years of failing health it became imperative that she have professional care, so on August 9, 1976, she was admitted to Winterset Care Center North where she was well cared for until she passed away on July 1, 1987, at the age of 86 years, 10 months and eight days.

Lula was a faithful member of the Bear Creek Friends Church where she served well in both Sunday School and Church and to other activities. She served many years as secretary of the Bear Creek School Reunion Committee, and she gave freely of her time to the Bear Creek Community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, an infant sister and one brother-in-law.

She is survived by one sister, Stella Jones of Earlham, two brothers, Virgil of New Virginia, Iowa and Earl of Earlham, two sisters-in-law, seven nephews, three nieces, many great nephews and nieces and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted on July 3, 1987 at the Bear Creek Friends Church with Pastor Keith Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Clyde Barnett, Rollin Barnett, Lyle Cook, Marvin Coulter, Frank Inman and Charles Mendenhall. Interment was in Bear Creek Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
