OBITUARY OF ELBERT JAMES BEALS

Elbert J. Beals, the son of James M. and Marget Dixon Beals was born October 20, 1894 near Carson, Iowa in Pottawattamie County. He passed away April 6, 1982 at the Earlham Manor Care Center where he had been a patient since February of this year.

At the age of seven, he and his family moved to a farm in the Bear Creek community. Elbert attended the Bear Creek Country School and graduated from Earlham High School in 1915.

Elbert served his country in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was active in farming for many years and worked for the Hadley family in the Bear Creek area for nearly 40 years. He always enjoyed making candy for his family and friends at Christmas time and in later years made woodworking his hobby.

He was a longtime member of the Bear Creek Friends Church.

Elbert was the first resident in the new Earlham Manor Apartments where he had made home since February of 1981.

Survivors include three brothers; Isaac of Indianola, Virgil of New Virginia and Earl of Earlham; also two sisters, Mrs. Stella Jones of Earlham and Miss Lula Beals of Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister and one brother, Asa.

Services were conducted at the Bear Creek Friends Church on Aporil 9, 1982 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Jones and the Rev. Steve Savage officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Belva White, organist and Bruce Beals, soloist. Casket bearers were James Beals, Brian Cole, Eldon Coulter, John Lamb, William Ralston and Robert Voorhees. Interment was at Bear Creek Cemetery, Dallas County, Iowa
