Douglas Baumgardner, Stanhope

Services for Douglas Baumgardner, 79, a former Winterset area resident who died July 21 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, were held Saturday, July 23 at the Exira Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa with the Rev. R. Carrol Johnson of the Exira Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Bowen Cemetery, Exira.

Born March 8, 1904 in Audubon County, Iowa, he was the son of Joseph and Rachel Ann Gothard Baumgardner. He attended Audubon County schools and married Elsie Heckman on Feb. 21, 1926. They farmed in the Adair-Cass County area before moving to a farm in Madison County near Winterset in 1936. He lived there 20 years and then retired and remained in the Winterset area, spending his last two years in Stanhope, Iowa.

Survivors include his children, Mrs. Eugene Brittain of Waukee, Darrell of Huxley, Verle of Steambrook, Ill., and Frank of Winterset; 18 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a sister, Blanche Wagner of Exira and a brother, John of Winchester, Mass.

Preceding him death were his parents, a grandson, two sisters and four brothers.
