James Bates Dies Here

Services were held Tuesday for James Elijah Bates, 86, who died Saturday, May 26, at Care Center North. Son of Cyrenas and Sabina Purvis Bates, he was born June 4, 1892 in Cambridge, Iowa.

A veteran of World War I, he married Iva Brown in 1925 in Albert Lee, Minnesota. She preceded him in death in September 1960. On April 28, 1962, Mr. Bates married Ethel Picken in Osceola, who survives him.

A farmer, Mr. Bates retired in 1971 and moved to Winterset from his farm in Clarke County. He was a member of the Deer Creek Chapel Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Edna; three brothers, Clyde, Edward and Galen; and two sisters, Della Vogt and Maude Huey.

Other survivors include son Jimmy D. Bates od Des Moines, stepsons Roger Picken of Omaha and Gilbert Picken of Fairmont, Minnesota; daughter Gladys Schellhorn of Waterloo; and brothers, Andrew, Ross and Clarence, all of Ames.

Rev. William Campbell conducted the 10:30 a.m. services at the Collins Funeral Home on May 29. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
