Barnes Death

Elgy Barnes of Redfield, father of Judy Burkhead, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, October 23, after a three week illness. Mr. Barnes suffered a massive stroke a month after Mrs. Burkhead's son, Tim, was injured in a motorcycle accident, which later claimed his life.

Mr. Barnes was born April 8, 1900, the son of Joseph and Mae Shirley Barnes. He was united in marriage to Fern Rhoades July 23rd, 1919. Survivors are his wife Fern, two sons, Ernest of Redfield, Howard of Dexter and four daughters, Judy Burkhead of Winterset, Jean Mooney of Adel, Lorene Stonehocker of Villisca and Creta Wigton of DeSoto.

Obituary

Elgy Bernard Barnes, the son of Joseph and Elrado Barnes, was born April 8, 1900 at Pocahontas, Minnesota. He passed away October 22, 1978 at Mercy hospital in Des Moines after a short illness. He was baptized at the Christian church in Redfield.

In Adel, Iowa on July 23, 1919 he married Fern Rhoads of Redfield. He leaves his wife, six children, 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Carroll (Creta) Wigton of Earlham; Howard of Dexter; Ernest of Redfield; Mrs. Lloyd (Lorene) Stonehocker, Mrs. Jack (Judy) Burkhead of Winterset; Mrs. App (Jean) Mooney of Adel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters, one grandson Tim Baumgardner.

Memorial service was held at the Chamberlain-Fisher Funeral Home in Redfield on Thursday, October 26, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Music was furnished by Martha Hill. Vocalist was Janet Pasco. Casket bearers were his grandsons—Leon Stonehocker, Tony Baumgardner, Jim Wigton, Larry Stonehocker, Howard Stonehocker and Rodney Barnes.

Interment was at the Harper cemetery north of Redfield.
