Lela Ballard, Douglas, Wyoming

Lela Craven Ballard, 82, of Douglas, Wyoming, died of complications from diabetes June 6, 1995, in Douglas.

She grew up in the Webster community and in Winterset. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1931. She operated a ranch north of Douglas with her husband Carroll for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and one brother.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Shirley of Douglas; a son, Jim of Douglas; a sister Letha Jackson of Winterset; and a brother Lester Craven of Des Moines.

Lela Ellen Ballard

DOUGLAS - Services for Lela Ellen Ballard, 82, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bill Moore. Interment will be at the Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Ballard died June 7, 1995, at Michael Manor in Douglas. She was born March 9, 1913, in Winterset, Iowa, to Joseph and Stella (Beem) Craven. She grew up and received her education in Winterset, where she graduated from Winterset High School.

On June 6, 1937, she married Carroll Eugene Ballard in Winterset. They moved to Douglas the same year.

Following completion of cosmetology school, Mrs. Ballard worked in Douglas for numerous years. She joined her husband in their ranching operation before purchasing the Blue Moon Motel. They operated the business until their retirement.

Mrs. Ballard was a member of Converse County CowBelles, American Legion Auxiliary and First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her houseplants, cooking and was an accomplished seamstress.

Survivors include her son, James Ballard of Douglas; her sister, Letha Jackson of Winterset; a brother, Lester Craven of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband who died April 15, 1989, and a brother, Floyd Craven. The Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas is in charge of arrangements.
