Helen Mary Bales, Vinton

Helen Mary Bales, 87, died Thurs., Nov. 14 at Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton where she and her husband have been residents for the past year. Funeral services were held November 18 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with the Rev. Lyndon H. Ruyte of the Vinton Assembly of God Church officiating. Graveside services were also held at the Earlham Cemetery.

She was born April 6, 1904 in Earlham to John and Estella (Stanley) Williamson and graduated as valedictorian of Earlham High School class of 1922. In 1926 she earned her teaching degree from Penn College and prior to her marriage taught home economics and was the girls basketball coach in Glasgow, Kan. and the Mondamson and Linden, Iowa school systems. She married Phillip Bales December 25, 1932 at her parent's farm home near Earlham. Prior to moving to Vinton in 1988 be be near their daughter and son-in-law, the couple resided in Earlham.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Ron Johnson of Vinton; a brother, Stanley Williamson of Earlham; a sister, Martha Clarkson of Winterset; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established at the Virginia Gay Annex, 503 N. 9th Avenue, Vinton, Iowa 52349.
