MARY WHITCOMB PAINTER

Mary L. Whitcomb was born Oct. 22 1844, at Wakeman, Huron county, Ohio, and was but 11 years of age when, in 1855, she came with her parents to Monroe, Jasper county, Iowa, by wagon in company with a number of other families. It was in the early summer and the trip was a pleasant one, occupying a month.

She was the daughter of Orrin and Lydia Whitcomb, both being descendants of old Connecticut families. She was united in marriage to Lewis Painter Aug. 11, 1866, and to this union eight children were born, two of whom preceded her in death. They moved from Jasper county to Lincoln township in Pottawatomie county in 1869, where they built a log cabin in which to live, then in 1870, moved to Cass county, then returning to their former home where they lived for 20 years and about four years ago, moved to their present home, where she passed away on April 9, 1920.

In her early life she united with the Methodist church, afterward changing her membership to another denomination. She leaves to mourn her death, the husband, six children, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the home on Sunday afternoon by Rev. Jackson Giddens and on Monday the remains were taken to Lewis, Iowa, for burial.
