Howard C. Gowin, 83, passed from this life on Friday, July 22, 2005 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital from heart disease. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Altoona United Methodist Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery near DeSoto, Iowa.

Howard was born November 8, 1921 to George and Mae Gowin. He was a proud patriot and a decorated veteran, having received four battle stars and the Bronze Star. Howard farmed in Madison County, managed the DeSoto Elevator for 25 years and then retired from the State of Iowa Grain Warehouse Division after nine years of service. After retirement, he went into business for himself as an examiner for grain elevators.

It was difficult to locate Howard during his retirement years. He enjoyed life to the hilt! He delivered congregate meals, volunteered at the Carroll County Historical Museum, tended flower beds for the City of Carroll, and was very active in the Lions Club and his church.

Howard was recognized by the Carroll Lions Club as Lion of the Year in 1988 and 2000. He was also a recipient of the Warren Coleman Honorary Award from Lions International. He chaired the Elderbridge Agency on Aging in 2001 and 2002. He and his wife, Margaret, were co-recipients of the Humanitarian Service Award presented by the Carroll Chamber of Commerce in 2001. He also thoroughly enjoyed participating in the political caucus process.

Howard didn't know a stranger and was always interested in visiting with people. He had a multitude of humorous sayings fondly referred to by his family as "Howardisms". He was immensely proud and supportive of his family and was a man of great faith.

Howard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Cameron); children, Cara (Ron) Stewart of Saylorville, Gisele (Jim) Duehring of Amarillo, TX, and Dana Howard (Meta) Gowin of Altoona; foreign exhange students, Ania Rojas Ortega of Chile, Margareth Alencar of Brazil, and Uwe Oestricher of Germany; grandchildren, Don (Kristi) Quijano of West Des Moines, Amy (John) Hunt of Clive, Elizabeth and Jason Early of Amarillo, TX, Cierra and Aurora Gowin of Altoona; sister, Evelyn (Bill) Ford of Kerrville, TX; brother, Herb (Fran) Gowin of Mesa, AZ; sisters and brothers-in-law from the Cameron Clan; Lorraine Cameron, Phil (Ruth) Cameron, Barbara Lightner, Beverly Fenimore, Rex (Sharon) Cameron and Ray (Vicki) Cameron and a host of relatives and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children, Ann and Craig; brothers-in-law, Robert Cameron, Jay Fenimore and Don Lightner.

Memorial contributions may be given to Iowa Public Television, DeSoto Fire and Rescue, Carroll Lions Club, the Altoona Historical Society or the Altoona United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Monday from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Altoona Funeral Home.
