Death of Mrs. Ellen Hawk

Mrs. Ellen Hawk, whose sickness was noted in these columns last week, died on Monday at Rochester, Minnesota, where she went several weeks ago for treatment. After undergoing an operation which was thought to be the only hope of saving her life, her condition was somewhat improved. Last week a change for the worse set in and her three children, Rev. Ira T. Hawk of Adel, Mrs. Geo Myers and Miss Mable Hawk of this place, were summoned on Saturday evening, and reached her bedside on Sunday. Her son, Lyle and sister, Mrs. Henry Hawk, were already there.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Alex Corkey at the Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon and burial in the Wight cemetery. Before moving to Winterset, Mrs. Hawk lived for many years in the Maple Grove neighborhood west of town where her family were reared and where her (unreadable) Christian life left its influence for good with many in that community.

Mrs. Ellen Augusta Hawk was born at Stockholm, Sweden, April 27, 1850, and died at Rochester, Minn., August 14, 1911 at the age of 61 years, three months and 17 days. When five years of age her parents came to America, making their home first in Chicago and later near Mendota, Ill.

She was married Oct. 10, 1869 to John Thos. Hawk and in the spring of 1871 the family removed to Madison county, Iowa. In this county, she has remained 40 years—8 years in Webster township, 24 years in Jackson township and 8 years in Winterset. Her death occurred at Rochester, where she had gone for treatment in the hospital.

To her were born six children, four of whom survive their mother. She also mothered two children of her husbands at the time of her marriage. These two are Mrs. Addie S. Kennedy and Mrs. Sadie McCarty, both in California. Her own children are Ira Tapper Hawk of Adel, Mrs. Clara Annie Myers of Winterset, Charles Lyle Hawk of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mabel Winifred Hawk of Winterset. She leaves one well-beloved grandchild, Elsie Naomi Myers and a brother and sister, Dr. John G. Tapper of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Annie Matilda Hawk of Winterset.

Mrs. Hawk was a true Christian. When 14 years of age, she was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran church, but two years after her marriage she united with the Evangelical association, the faith of her husband. After her removal to Winterset, her membership was transferred to the Presbyterian church, a communion which she greatly loved.

After the death of her husband, Nov. 21, 1888 she became both father and mother to her family and if the words “Christian mother” ever told a life’s story, they told hers.
