Funeral services for Mabel Mae Johnston, 93, were held Mon., Nov. 19 at the United Methodist Church in Dexter with the Rev. Jill Flyr officiating. Johnston died Fri., Nov. 16 from a heart condition at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
The daughter of John Emmet and Effie (Garby) Johnston, she was born November 29, 1986 (1896) in Madison County. She belonged to the Dexter United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She cared for her parents on the farm and later moved into Dexter and lived with her brother Earl. Mae worked for several years at Drews Candy Shop and baby sat for many families in Dexter. In 1980 she went to the Earlham Manor Care Center to live.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Glen, Charles and Earl.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Page 6, Column 5Mabel Mae Johnston, daughter of John Emmet and Effie Garby Johnston, was born November 29, 1896 in Madison County, Iowa and passed away November 16, 1990 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mae belonged to the Dexter United Methodist Church, was a member of the United Methodist Women and worked there faithfully for many years.
She spent her life working for others, staying at home and taking care of her parents on the farm. Later she moved into Dexter and lived with her brother, Earl.
Mae worked for several years at Drews Candy Shop and babysat for many families in Dexter. She loved and raised lots of flowers and vegetables, and cats were her favorite pets.
In 1980 she went to the Earlham Manor Care Center to live and for as long as she was able Mae continued to help the other residents.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Glen, Charles and Earl.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted November 19, 1990 at the United Methodist Church, Dexter, Iowa with Reverend Jill Flyr officiating. Robert Lawson provided organ music. Pallbearers were Dale McGinnis, Leon Thompson, Donald Hurst, Norbert Tigges, Gaylord Thompson and Larry Sudbrock. Interment was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa.
