Flossie Helen, daughter of Randsom and Minerva N. Percy Kincaid, was born Aug. 1, 1881 at Smith's Basin, New York and passed away December 31, 1979 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children.
When very young her father died and they moved to Vermont, where she lived until coming to Iowa with her aunt, Mary Percy, in 1900. She attended Dexter Normal School and in 1901 she received her certificate to teach. She taught in Penn Township until she was united in marriage to George Atherton on December 24, 1905. Two children were born to this union and they lived for many years on a farm east of Dexter.
In 1961 they moved to Dexter and in 1971 she lost her husband. Unable to keep up her home, she took up her residency in the Community Care Center in Stuart.
Flossie loved flowers and all growing things and loved to share with friends. During her 58 years as a member of the Eastern Star, she held all offices many times, except secretary.
Preceding her in death besides her parents, were her stepfather, her brother, two sisters, and her husband George.
Surviving are her children; her daughter, Audrey Louise Dennis of Hemet, California, and her son, Rex Wilmot Atherton of Kingman, Arizona; four grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Thursday, January 3, 1980 at 1:00 p.m. at the Link Funeral Home in Stuart, Iowa. Interment was at the Dexter cemetery.
