Wilma B. Applegate, 83, of Earlham died of heart failure Aug. 28, 1998, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Sept 2) at 10:30 a.m. at the Earlham Friends Church with Pastor Donald Applegate officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery near Earlham.

Wilma Applegate was born May 14, 1915, at the family home near Linden to Bruce and Florence (Wright) Barnett. She was a 1932 graduate of Linden High School. Following graduation, she worked for five years as a housekeeper in Des Moines. She married Dwayne Applegate Feb. 11, 1939, at the Salem Friends Church. They farmed near Redfield from 1939 until 1952, when they moved to a farm south of Dexter. Wilma was a member of the Earlham Friends Church, where she taught Sunday School, a member of the Penn Center United Methodist Women and was involved with the Penn Center Community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Haxton (wife Donna) of Adel, Rodney Applegate of Bakersfield, Calif., and Randy Applegate of Huber Heights, Ohio; three daughters, Lois Hamann of Florida, Karla Burcham (husband Skip) of Riverside, Ohio, and Darla Countryman of Mitchellville; two brothers, Robert Barnett (wife Mary Ellen) of Newberg, Ore., and Rollin "Joe" Barnett (wife Velma) of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Celine Mendenhall of Whittier, Calif., and Marle Cook (husband Otha) of Earlham; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Home of Earlham.
