Charles M. Anderson, St. Charles

Services for Charles M. Anderson, 75, St. Charles, who died June 12, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center were held Tuesday, June 16, at the St. Charles Parish Church in St. Charles with the Rev. Arthur Eady of Indianola officiating. Burial was in the St. Charles Cemetery.

Born March 18, 1912 at St. Charles, he was the son of James and Beulah Buchanan Anderson. He attended the St. Charles Schools, Monmouth College in Illinois and Iowa State University in Ames.

He was married Aug. 26, 1939 to Florence Black at St. Charles. He was retired from the State Department of Public Instruction and was engaged in farming until his death. He was a charter member of the Lions Club at St. Charles, the Model Chapter 174 Order of the Eastern Star at St. Charles and the Model Lodge 315 A.F. and A.M. at St. Charles. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at St. Charles which was later changed to the St. Charles Parish Church.

Survivors include daughters, Karen M. Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Sheryl North and husband, Dr. David E. North of Ottumwa; a son, Richard Anderson of Roseville, Minn.; sisters, Alice Blair and Wilma Edgar, both of St. Charles; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife in 1975.

Charles M. Anderson

Charles M. Anderson was born in St. Charles, Iowa on March 18, 1912, the eldest child of James and Beulah Buchanan Anderson. He died June 12, 1987 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa from complications following cardiovascular surgery at the age of 75 years, two months and 24 days.

He resided in the St. Charles community throughout his life, graduating from St. Charles High School with the class of 1930. He attended Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois and Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.

On August 26, 1939, Charles, or “Chick” as he was affectionately addressed by his friends, married Florence Black in St. Charles, Iowa. They were the parents of three children.

He farmed all his adult life and retired from the Department of Surplus Property in 1977 after 25 years of employment as Assistant Supervisor.

Charles was reared in the United Presbyterian Church and was later a member of the St. Charles Parish. He was a charter member of the St. Charles Lions Club, a third degree Mason with 42 years membership in the St. Charles Masonic Lodge and held membership in the Order of the Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Florence in 1975.

He is survived by his children: Karen M. Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sheryl North and husband, Dr. David E. North of Ottumwa, Iowa and Richard Anderson of Roseville, Minnesota. Erica and Deidre Anderson and David and Steffany North will cherish their grandfather’s memory; two sisters, Wilma Edgar, and Alice Blair of St. Charles, Iowa and their children, Don and James of the San Francisco Bay area, and Margaret Blair Britton of Davenport, Iowa also survive him. Additionally, “Charlie” is survived by his special friend, Margaret Cook of Des Moines, and her children, Graham Cook of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sarah Zimmerman of Lafayette, California, and their families. Countless family members and friends have been touched by his life.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the general scholarship funds at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa or Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa.
