Obituary

Oh, how our hearts languish, how deep is the anguish!
And sorrow now sits on her throne.

Last Friday evening, July 5th at 7 o’clock, after six months of intense suffering, borne so patiently, Theo C. Stewart gave up the stern battle and bid adieu to all things material and is now safe from earth’s cruel storms. Free from the troubles of this world, she will forever rejoice in that new life and await the coming of those who so dearly loved her here.

Services were held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal church, on Sunday afternoon, Right Rev. Bishop Worthington, of the dioceses of Nebraska, officiating.

The remains were preceded to the cemetery by four young ladies dressed in pure white; the pall bearers, consisting of six young gentlemen, all intimate friends and companions of Theo’s.

The handsome casket was covered with beautiful floral tributes, placed there by the hands of loving friends, evidences of the universal esteem and affection entertained for the fair but frail little plant that had been but so recently transplanted into our midst.

Handsome, vivacious, with a sunny, genial disposition, she had made hosts of firm and true friends here, who, with hearts bowed down, most sincerely regret her untimely demise.

The heartfelt sympathy of our entire community is extended to the heart-broken mother and relatives, who were untiring in their love and devotion up to the last moment, and also to the absent father and relatives at Winterset. That God, in his infinite mercy, may console an comfort the deeply afflicted, in the prayer of.

The above was written by a Grand Island friend of Theo’s, and shows how she has won friends in that town during the short time she had lived there. Theo Stewart was born in Winterset and only last year removed with her mother to Grand Island.

She had a wonderful mind and an extraordinary memory. Only a few years ago she graduated from our public schools with highest honors, completing the school course in less time than any pupil had ever before completed it.

She had a wonderful way of making friends in this town and was a universal favorite with Winterset people to whom the sad news of her death came so unexpectedly. No one had truer or firmer friends in this town than she and their grief at the early death of their bright vivacious, companion is profound, and their heartfelt sympathy goes out to her parents and relatives in their sad affliction.
