Lela Irene Herrick, 95, of Winterset died Feb. 26, 2006, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 2, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 1) where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery.
Lela Herrick was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Madison County to Charles B. and Florence (Mapes) Harrison. She was baptized in 1926 at the Church of Christ in Creston. On Oct. 9, 1926, she married James Herrick. They established their first home in rural Mt. Edna where they farmed. They also farmed in Adams and Madison counties until retiring in 1962. After retiring from farming, Lela and her husband worked for Bickford & Murrays Funeral Home in Fontanelle, later moving to Creston where they worked for Keating Funeral Home. In 1972, they moved to Winterset. During her working career, Lela also was employed as a certified med-aide at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset and as a certified nurse assistant at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Fontanelle and Care Center South and Bethesda (West Bridge) Care Center, both in Winterset. She also was a longtime member of the Polka Club of Iowa
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, sisters and two grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Neva M. Sirdoreus of Norwalk and Charlotte I. Drake of Creston; four sons, Charles J. Herrick of Winterset, Donald D. Herrick of Farmington, Paul E. Herrick of DeSoto and David L. Herrick of Patterson; and 23 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
