Obituary – N. P. Pomeroy

Neal Power Pomeroy was born in Holmes county, Ohio, July 13, 1823, and died at his home in St. Charles, Sept. 15, 1911, aged 83 years, one month and 27 days. He came to Iowa in 1854, and settled on a farm near Elm Grove. About six years ago, he and his good wife left the farm and came to their home in St. Charles, where they lived until the Master called him home. Last June, while picking cherries, he fell from the tree and was severely injured. Soon after this, he suffered a light stroke of paralysis. Then, very gradually, he grew weaker, without suffering. While he suffered much during the last few days, it is a comfort to know that now he is free from all pain at Home. Over and over, to different ones, he said “All is well, whether I go or stay”.

He was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Collins Nov. 21, 1860. To this union were born seven children, four girls and three boys, all of whom have grown to maturity and are now living in homes of their own. All were present at the funeral services except Mrs. Bradshaw, who was detained by reason of her illness.

Mr. Pomeroy was converted and united with the M. E. church at Hankey in the winter of 1890, during a revival conducted by Rev. W. W. Williams. He started life in a humble way, and by (unreadable) of industry and good judgment and a saving helpmate, he acquired a competency. He always had time for a kind word and pleasant smile. His quiet, affable personality was always winning for him hosts of friends who will miss him more than tongue can tell. These pages from the scenes of life, another of the (heroic?) band of Madison county pioneers. The funeral services were held (unreadable) afternoon, Sept. 17th, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. E. George, after which interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
