Funeral services for A. L. "Von" Allen of Earlham, who died Jan. 23 at his home, were held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at United Methodist Church in Earlham. He was 81 years old.
Born Aug. 10, 1900 in Hendricks County, Indiana, he was the son of Arthur and Sarah Wrightsman Allen. His family moved to the Earlham area when he was a child, where he attended grade school and later graduated from high school in 1920.
In 1928 he began working for the Hawkeye Portland Cement Co. and later the Marquette Cement Co.
In 1933 he married Pauline Welch. The couple moved to Dexter where they lived for 17 years before moving back to Earlham in 1951. Mrs. Allen died in 1959.
He was a member of the Earlham Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Madison Lodge No. 568 of Earlham, Scottish Rite Bodies and ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine of Des Moines.
He was also an active promoter and worker in the local elderly congregate meals program.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.
He is survived by his son, Robert, of Ames; four nieces; and two sisters-in-law.

Von Allen, the son of Arthur and Sarah Wrightsman Allen was born August 10, 1900 in Hendricks County, Indiana. He passed away at his home in Earlham on January 23, 1982.
As a young child Von moved with his family to the Worthington neighborhood. Later they moved to Hardin County and then back to Earlham where he finished grade school and graduated from high school in 1920.
In 1928 he began working for the Hawkeye Portland Cement Co. and later the Marquette Cement Co.
In 1933 Von was united in marriage to Pauline Welch. The couple moved to Dexter where they lived 17 years before moving back to Earlham in 1951. One adopted son blessed their marriage. Pauline passed away in 1959.
Von was a member of the Earlham Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Madison Lodge No. 568 of Earlham, Scottish Rite Bodies and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines. He was an active promoter and worker in the local congregate meals program.
Survivors include his son, Robert, of Ames; four nieces; two sisters-in-law and many, many friends.
Von was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Earlham, Iowa on January 27, 1982 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Walter Sieck officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Gretchen Brittain. Casket bearers were Charles Anker, Earl Anker, Norman Hougham, Jim Kress, James Reinert, Glen Stegall. Interment was at the Earlham Cemetery.
