CHAARLES BUTTERFIELD Dies

Charles D. Butterfield, one of Winterset's most respected citizens for half a century, died Monday, September 17, 1973, at Memorial Hospital here. He was 75 years of age.

Mr. Butterfield had retired in 1970 after a banking career of 47 years in Winterset at what is now the Farmers and Merchants State Bank.

He was born January 14, 1898 in DeWitt and came to Winterset in 1922 to join the staff of the Citizens National Bank. During his life here he was active in a variety of community services. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years and served as treasurer of the county polio association for over 25 years.

In 1937 he was elected city treasurer of Winterset, a post he held continuously until 1971. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, serving as elder for many years.

Mr. Butterfield was married June 2, 1926 to Lela Simmerman, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Jane Davis of Ft. Collins, Colorado; a son, John Butterfield of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Jones of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset with the Rev. Alan Parker officiating. Burial will be made in the Winterset Cemetery.
