Charles R. Agan, Winterset

Charles Raymond Agan was born June 27, 1897, in Valeen, Orange County, Ind. He was the seventh of nine children born to James W. Agan and Nancy Adeline Smith Agan. He died on June 27 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, at the age of 90 years.

He moved from Indiana to the Peru area when he was 20 years old. He came to work on a farm and to join his brother Wesley Agan who had moved here earlier. He was married to Clara May Vannatta. Charlie and Clara first lived near Knoxville where Charlie worked on a farm. Their son Raymond was born in Marion County, Iowa. Charlie and Clara moved to their farm home in Peru in 1922 where Charles farmed the land and lived for the rest of his life.

Mr. Agan was a member of the Peru United Methodist Church where he regularly attended Sunday school and worship services as long as his health permitted. He was active on the church board there for many years. He was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife Clara of Peru; son Raymond Agan and daughter-in-law Mary Lou Agan of Huntsville, Texas; grandchildren, John Agan of Huntsville, Texas, and Charla Jo Ann Agan Schapfel and husband, Dr. William J. Schapfel of West Bend, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Cheryl Schapfel Delaney and husband of Abilene, Texas, Christine Schapfel and Stephanie Schapfel of West Bend, Wis., Rick Agan of Spirit Lake, Mike Agan, Jim Agan and Steve Agan of Winterset; and one great-great-grandson, Christopher Delaney of Abilene, Texas.
